Reusable and open methods and protocols in the life sciences

Guideline 11(interner Link) points out that the methods used to answer research questions must be verifiable. Detailed recording of the methods used can be helpful in supporting verifiability and ensuring that the documentation relevant to the realisation of a research result is in line with Guideline 12(interner Link). Published by the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the Science and Knowledge Services of the European Commission, "PRO-MaP (Promoting Reusable and Open Methods And Protocols)"(externer Link) contains recommendations for the verifiable, open and community-friendly documentation of life science research methods. Addressed to researchers, research institutions, publishers/editors and research funders, the recommendations aim to improve the description of methods, reward the sharing of methods, create incentives to promote the sharing of step-by-step protocols in dynamic repositories, and enable updates as protocols evolve.
