Considering Gender/Sex & Diversity in Science and Research – 10 points for implementation at Goethe University Frankfurt

The promotion of gender equality has been anchored in the mission statements of numerous research institutions for several years. Recently, more attention has been paid to considering diversity, too. This also applies to reflecting on the relevance of gender and diversity in research. Goethe University Frankfurt am Main has published a ten-point paper on these issues and as a contribution to the nationwide discourse.

Best-practice example for the communication of good research practice

The “Borstel Model” was developed in response to a serious case of scientific misconduct at the Research Centre Borstel (FZB), Leibniz Lung Center. On page 18f (available in German only), it says: “An analysis of this case of scientific misconduct and the damage it caused not only serves to comprehend and evaluate the specific case, it is also an ideal opportunity to critically examine the overall system in place at a research institution. The Borstel Model was developed with the aim of initiating positive developments and change processes at the FZB based on this analysis: it consists of five pillars for the preven-tion of scientific misconduct. The idea behind the Borstel Model is to interlink structure, strategy and behaviour/culture. The framework conditions at an institution are the rules we set ourselves for academic work.”
